and now there are questions about hawaii's emergency warning system. some say that it didn't alert them to the on-coming danger. kron four's. michael thomas is live in the newsroom with the latest. michael. >> you know, these stories of survivors not really knowing about the fire matches up with what they told me yesterday at the airport when they landed. and this morning we're learning that hawaii's famous emergency warning system didn't even go off at all during these wildfires before those. 55 people lost their lives. take a look at how parts of maui look right now. just a horrific in total. more than 1000 structures have been destroyed with the rising death count of 55 as crews are still on the ground searching for survivors. many tell us they had no idea there was even a fire happening until they saw smoke heard an explosion and had to run. and according to hawaii's emergency management records, there's no indication that the warning sirens went off at all or were even triggered. state officials say they did instead send out emergency text alerts
